Split hair ends – cut or save?

The problem with split ends usually affects women who own longer hair. If they grow their hair for many months or years and the hair is rarely cut, then the problem can be very noticeable. The issue is that split ends in long hair are much more persistent than in short hair. And above all, the split hair ends certainly do not look aesthetically pleasing. So how do you deal with them appropriately?

Is it possible to save the damaged ends?

A lot of people try, but in all honesty, it’s rather unsuccessful. Indeed, there are hundreds of products in stores dedicated to split ends regeneration, but frankly they primarily work only in the short term. Such cosmetics essentially glue the ends, making it seem that they have regenerated – but it all gets revealed after the next hair washing. In essence, the problem is not solved but briefly masked.

Of course, it’s worth to highlight that this type of cosmetics can also improve the overall condition of the hair, and the strands that haven’t yet split. However, the strands that have already been split unfortunately can’t be saved. Instead, they should cut. The earlier, the better, because if we ignore the problem, it will soon become far more noticeable and serious. And it’s important to highlight that a simple trim of 2cm won’t do it – if you want to recover the truly healthy hair then you’ll need to cut deep, taking at least 10cm off, (depending on how serious the split end problem is).

Split hair ends – the main causes

Why do the tips of the hair split and what makes them so vulnerable? In short, they split when they are damaged. And they are damaged because of various factors: repeated jerked during brushing, rubbing against clothing, exposure to heat during hair drying and straightening. In fact, this is the primary reason why they tend to rapidly split – stylizing is the bane of all hair ends, anything from curling to simply drying with hot air. Dyeing has also proved to be harmful. And showing your hair lack of care also leads to bad results; washing your hair is certainly not enough.

How to prevent the ends from splitting?

A healthy diet and nourishing – that’s the key!

Above all else, it’s the proper diet that matters. It is certainly worth taking care of healthy eating, and thus nourishing from the inside. Balanced meals provide the body with essential nutrients, without which hair, skin and nails would become fragile and prone to breaking. Water is also important. Every day you should drink a large amount of water – if you can, at least 2 litres.

Good hairdresser

This one may be less obvious, but a bad haircut will make the ends split much faster than the ones cut professionally. Regular cutting of hair tips should be done in a reliable, well received hairdressing salon – they know what they’re doing, and they know exactly how to cut your hair in order to relieve them from the damaged ends. It’s not as simple as cutting them off. But even if we decide to do it at home, it’s necessary that we equip ourselves with proper hairdressing scissors and hair clippers. That way the hair is cut with proper blades, and it’s not put at risk of further breaking. The split hair ends should be cut every couple of months.

The limitations of drying, straightening and curling

As was already mentioned above, your hair does not respond well to heat. If you use a hair dryer, straightener or curler often, this will not only dry the hair, but it may also cause permanent damage in the form of split ends, and in worst case scenarios burned-out hair tips. If you really must use these treatments, then at least invest in some heat-protective products that can really help to reduce the damage taken. Frequent dyeing is also criticised for ridding your hair of all the natural, healthy nutrients – so if you don’t want your hair to feel dry and brittle, you should also avoid this procedure.

Additional externally-absorbed nutrients in form of masks and oils

You must frequently take care of your hair to keep it in good condition. A good way to do this is to develop a habit of using conditioners after each washing, or even before the washing. And at least once a week apply a nutrient-rich hair mask. Your hair strands love being cleansed with oils too. Oiling hair will ensure they’re kept moisturised.
