Women’s hair loss
Women’s hair loss – baldness is not just a male problem
The fact that men (of course not all of them) age and gradually lose their hair, is not at all surprising. Unless, the balding stage begins sooner than expected e.g. in young adolescence. But the point is, all of us know a young balding man, or at least saw one in the past. Nonetheless, even though balding is ‘accepted’ in man, at a time when men also like to take care of themselves, and especially for their hair, premature baldness can be a serious problem. And if it affects women, you can imagine that the situation becomes even more difficult. Women’s hair loss is an issue certainly worth talking about. It is worth shedding a bit of light, and emphasising that such a problem exists, and is more prominent than we think. But also that a person can easily deal with it, and one should not shroud themselves with embarrassment or fear of treatment and expression.
Hair loss in men – the main causes
Predispositions for early baldness can be inherited, this is fairly obvious. We see this over and over again, that if the older men in the family lose their hair quickly, this predisposition will likely be inherited by later generations – though this isn’t always the case. Most often we first observe a developing receding hairline, deepening hairline curves or bald patches growing on top of the head.
Excessive hair loss can also result because of a poor diet and experiencing intense amounts of stress. Some say that you go grey because of worrying too much, but the interesting fact is that you can also start losing hair! States of great depression can therefore hugely contribute to changing a man’s appearance; especially the hairstyle, as the once thick hair become think and brittle.
However! It is true, that hormones are the most common cause of baldness in men. Male baldness affects more than half of British men over the age of fifty. Sometimes it starts much earlier, other times much later – but it is very likely that it will develop at one point. Whether a man will be bald depends on a testosterone derivative, or rather dihydrotestosterone. It’s increased amounts negatively affect the hair follicles, causing the hair to grow thinner and shorter, and in the final stages only the dead follicle remains.
In this day and age there are many ways of preventing baldness, and there are hundreds of stimulant products out on the market that allow this. But one thing is certain, once a man starts balding it’s rare to completely halt this process.
Women’s hair loss – the primary causes
The male-style baldness i.e. androgenic balding may also affect women, although on a much smaller scale. Statistics say that more than 60% of adult men are struggling with baldness, in women it is roughly around 20%. As mentioned above, hormonal disorders and genes are therefore not without influence on the health of both men and women.
Other causes of women’s hair loss include illnesses such as: alopecia areata, anaemia, diabetes, thyroid disease, hormonal disturbances in postpartum period, menopause etc. Then there are external issues which yield the hair-issues, such as: consuming contraception, antidepressants or anticoagulants or experiencing chemotherapy, accidents, surgical complications among others.
Can baldness be treated?
Men find it easier to lose their hair than women, as was aforementioned – to most men it’s an inevitable and natural process. However, there are also those who try to overcome the problem with all means and efforts. Hair loss, both male and female can indeed be treated and there are many ways to go about it. The first step should certainly be to visit a dermatologist or trichologist, who will assess the condition of your scalp and hair, and if necessary, carry out precise blood tests. Finding the cause of hair loss is key here, because then an appropriate method of treatment can be applied, without endangering the patient. Once this is complete, only then will it be possible to take upon an appropriate treatment. Both internal and external treatments can be undergone, though they may not entirely solve the problem. Remember that during recover process, and in the last resort, you can opt for hair extensions, wigs or even surgical methods, such as hair transplants.
